Karioitahi is a magic piece of west coast beach. Its broad black sands are mostly firm from the road access all the way south to
the mouth of the Waikato river. As you go further south, the tall cliffs of the sand dunes fall away inland. Without hindrance, the wind
can flow cleanly off the ocean and across the beach, effectively increasing the windspeed. A perfect reward for the trip!
Karioitahi is classed as a highway, and it gets well used as such. There is plenty of room for everyone, but do keep an eye out. The legal speed limit of 70kph really throws down the gauntlet... (imagine the speed camera photo!) This is the beach where BlownAway does most of its karting.
How to get there
Take the southern motorway, get off at Drury and head towards Pukekohe. After 10 minutes you will come to a Caltex service station on your left - take
the right at the intersection immediately after it and head towards Waiuku. This road will take you all the way into Waiuku. Click on the map for an
enlargement - it includes a detailed map to guide you through Waiuku. Constable Dve will take you out to the beach. The trip takes 1 hour from the city.
